Why is community development important in Child Sponsorship?

Submitted by Vuong.Hai.Son_124112 on

When a community is stable and productive, it can provide for its children’s long-term well-being; the most effective way to improve children’s well-being is to strengthen their community’s ability to provide for it.

The well-being of a child is dependent on their families and community. In order to thrive, children need to grow up in an environment that can provide the essentials for today, together with hope and opportunity for the future.

How are children chosen for sponsorship?

We work with community representatives to identify the areas of greatest need. The community then chooses children from those needy areas for sponsorship. This list of needy children is verified by our staff and the children become representatives for the Child Sponsorship programme.

World Vision workers fully explain the concept of Child Sponsorship and inform families that all members of the community get to share in the benefit.

Ideally, Child Sponsorship is a long-term commitment lasting for the duration of our work in a particular community, which typically lasts for 10-15 years.

How does Child Sponsorship work?

Child Sponsorship works very simply! Your monthly recurring donation will provide your sponsored child, his/her family and community with basic needs, love and care through your sponsorship support. In turn, you will receive annual progress updates and can even correspond with your child.

A child’s life is transformed through your sponsorship!

How can I be sure my donations are really benefiting the community?

At World Vision, we consider every donation a sacred trust. Therefore, as part of our stewardship, we optimise the funds, resources and distribute them to where they are needed most in the communities we are helping. We carefully monitor and review our programmes and costs periodically, making sure the funds are achieving the highest possible impact in the lives of the children and families. For financial accountability, we are audited by external and independent auditors, KPMG Singapore for the Singapore office.

How much of the sponsorship amount actually goes to the child? How do you allocate the funds among the five key sectors?

Submitted by Vuong.Hai.Son_124112 on

A maximum 20% of the S$50 is allocated for communication, public education and administrative costs. The remainder of your contribution is then allocated according to the needs of the community where your sponsored child is from. Some of the aspects that determine the use of the sponsorship contribution are ready infrastructure, traditions and culture, natural resources, and a community’s development phase. Depending on the level of necessity and development chronology, funds will be channelled to develop each area at varying amounts and at different stages.

Is my donation tax-deductible?
