Selenge is located in northeastern Mongolia near the Russian border. About 30% of the population live in poverty. Many families struggle with unemployment and limited opportunities for business or self-employment. Poor sanitation and environmental hygiene have led to disease outbreaks, putting children at risk. Harsh climate conditions, weak infrastructure, and a nomadic herding lifestyle further threaten livelihoods. Driven by poverty, some children work illegally in nearby mines, contributing to school dropouts and child protection concerns.

Together with Child Sponsors, we have helped families in Selenge build sustainable livelihoods—laying the foundation for children to grow up healthy, protected from harm, and ready for a brighter future.

“One girl told me that she wanted to be a dentist because she noticed that the other children’s teeth weren’t so good. Another girl (who I sponsor) and her sibling told me they want to become doctors because their father was bedridden for an entire year. These children have a different drive behind their aspirations beyond just self-fulfilment. It’s not just grades or individual gains – they carry a desire to serve and help others.”

“I participated in a dairy product preparation training organised by World Vision with my mother. This training significantly boosted our family’s income, as we started selling the dairy products we made. I proudly showcased these products at my school’s fall fair, using the methods I learnt.”
