About the Area Programme

Muong Cha is a remote, mountainous district in Dien Bien province, in Northwestern Vietnam. The district faces a high poverty rate (living on less than USD$2.15 a day) of 42.86%, making it one of the poorest areas in Vietnam.

Most families rely on small-scale farming for subsistence, with limited market access. Economic hardship also increases school dropouts, especially among girls due to child marriage and the need to work away from home. Muong Cha is also prone to flash floods and landslides, which have significantly disrupted the lives and livelihoods due to a lack of disaster preparedness.
